With your help we can open up the world's first Museum of Youth Culture

The Museum of Youth Culture works with people and organisations across the Britain to protect our youth history, from grassroots community organisations to national public institutions, local youth clubs to venues, brands and other group invested in this history. All our work stems from our motto; Preserve to Inspire.

Our work is rooted in partnerships and collaborations, working with funders, brands, creatives and other people & organisations to inspire positive change in society. There are many ways you can get involved and support our vital work to build the Museum of Youth Culture.

Museum Partnerships

Central to the museum is the understanding that youth culture is invaluable social history. We work with partners across the heritage, culture and community sectors, as well as supporting brands to tell their youth culture story. With our partners we work on exhibitions, events, workshops, education and other projects.

Project we have run with our partners includes;

  • Youth culture research and consultation. With our expertise on the history of youth culture and a network of experts, we can help you uncover the story and history of your brand.
  • Exhibitions and youth culture curation. We work with cultural institutions to help tell the story of youth culture history, from commissioned exhibitions to photo partnerships, consultation and co-curation.
  • Events programme. With over 20 years of experience archiving youth culture and a network of hundreds of photographers, creatives and youth culture experts, we work with our partners to develop and deliver events around youth culture history.
  • Education and workshops. Our education programme sits at the heart of our work, and we collaborate with our partners to provide workshops, mentoring schemes and master classes around youth culture, heritage skills and creativity.
  • Preservation projects. We collaborate with brands, youth and community organisations, as well as individual photographers to preserve and digitise their history - scanning and digitising archive collections, recording oral histories and working on specialist collections.
  • Licensing. We work with brands and partners to celebrate youth and subculture history through tailored licensing and creative collaborations.

Education Programme

The UK academic system doesn't always work for everyone, often leaving our most creative young people behind whether that's due to learning difficulities, social backgrounds or different learning styles.

At a time when young people's communities are constantly being undercut, at the Museum of Youth Culture we run radical education workshops with a curriculum focussed on the virtues of self expression and creativity. Our teaching method engages our archive of British social history to connect and inspire young people. Our workshops promote diversity of thought, encouraging those who fit outside the box to step up and express themselves.

Our workshops run from our archive studio in Vauxhall, South London, as well as in schools, colleges, museums, libraries, and festivals nationwide.

Making a big impact in society is our mission, and collaboration is key. We work with leading youth homeless charities, pupil referral units and dyslexia organisations, and our staff have all received high quality training in safeguarding and disability awareness.

Your donations help us to develop our education programme and work with young people across the UK. Our education programme is not just about funding, we are always looking for people to collaborate with and help develop our work - please get in touch.

Preservation Work

At the Museum of Youth Culture, our daily work is underpinned by the fact that so much of youth culture history is at risk of being lost. We believe that youth culture is a vital part of our social history and one that must be protected.

We work with individuals, youth clubs, community organisations, local councils, venues and other historic youth groups to digitise and preserve their stories. Whilst our Grown up in Britain campaign works with the wider public to collect their memories and photographs of being young, we also run a free digitisation and scanning service for groups and run targeted collection drives and projects to document untold histories that are high-risk of disappearing.

We work to future proof the story of growing up in Britain for the next generation.

Your donations enable us to continue our preservation work and free scanning and digitisation service. Do you know of a story that needs to be in the museum? Get in touch with us at: info@museumofyouthculture.com.
